VOLUNTEER/INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Get involved in the lives of kids and make a POSITIVE difference!

Thank you so much for your interest in volunteering or interning with the Boys & Girls Clubs of York County. We consider our volunteers/interns to be invaluable assets who are vital to our ability to make a significant, deep impact on the lives of our youth. Just a little bit of each individual’s time and talents can collectively open up a whole new world for the kids.

What sorts of things can you volunteer to do at the Clubs? The possibilities are truly endless! But, to get you started, here are just a few ideas (organized into our 5 core program areas):

Educational/Career:

  • Help children with their math, spelling, reading, writing, and other skills during our Power Hour (homework help) program.
  • Help teens in higher-level coursework such as Algebra, Geometry, Biology, Chemistry, etc.
  • Reading Mentor – read one-on-one with a child, read a favorite children’s story to a group.
  • Assist us in career education. Give a talk and do a Q&A session about your career, or educate the children on job search skills like resume writing or interviewing.

Sports/Recreation:

  • If you are an expert in a particular sport, consider teaching the fundamental skills, rules, and strategies to the children, AND/OR run a league or tournament.
  • Spend some time playing board games, video games, pool, ping-pong, foosball, etc. with the kids.
  • Introduce a new activity, game, or skill, such as martial arts, fitness training, or model making.

The Arts:

  • Offer choral or instrument lessons.
  • Run a drama workshop or direct the children in a play.
  • Lead workshops or activities in areas like photography, dance, architecture, sewing, painting, drawing, or culinary arts.
  • Implement fun and engaging arts & crafts projects, perhaps for a particular season or holiday.
  • Technology Mentor – help kids create web pages, make videos, compose music, conduct web searches, learn Photoshop, do graphic design, and more. Also needed are individuals who can assist with routine computer maintenance.

Health and Life Skills:

  • Instruct on basic cooking skills, such as kitchen safety, meal preparation, and proper nutrition.
  • Volunteer to provide and/or prepare a balanced and healthy Kids Café hot meal for the Club.
  • Teach teens how to balance a checkbook and manage their finances.
  • Recount a life experience that teaches a life lesson.

Character and Leadership:

  • Design and implement a community service project with the children.
  • Lead a workshop on public speaking.

Other Ideas:

  • Assist us with our existing national youth development programs that we are currently running (in one of our 5 core areas).
  • Start a club at the Club! Examples might include a drama club, cooking club, dance club, chess club, basketball club, etc.

Ready to Get Started??

All volunteers/interns must fill out a volunteer/internship application. The application should then be either forwarded by mail to the Administrative office at P.O. Box 226, Rock Hill, SC 29731, e-mailed to admin@bgcyc.org, faxed to (803) 324-7960, or delivered in person to 410 E. Black Street in Rock Hill. Upon receipt, a background check will be performed. Once the background check is completed, you will be contacted to determine the details regarding which Club you will be going to, what you are interested in doing, and what your schedule will be. You will receive a brief volunteer orientation by the Unit Director on your first day.

Get ready to begin one of the most rewarding experiences of your life!
