FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ's)

Where are you located?

The Boys & Girls Clubs of York County has four Club sites: three in Rock Hill, and one in Fort Mill. See our Locations page for addresses and contact information, and our Club Corner for more detail on what’s happening at each Club.

What hours are the Clubs open?

Hours of operation depend on the type of Club (elementary vs. middle school/teen), and time of year and all Clubs are open Monday through Friday. The Northside Club (Rock Hill) is open from 2:30-6:30 p.m. while the Fort Mill Club is open from 2:20-6:00 p.m. The Club Teen Centers located at Sullivan and Rawlinson Road Middle Schools (Rock Hill) are open from 3:45-7:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 3:45-6 p.m. on Fridays. During summer camp, the Northside Club is open Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The Clubs are open on every school day throughout the year. Generally, on half-days, the Clubs open earlier and the kids are welcome to come to the Club right after school. In the event of inclement weather, we will operate as the school districts do (if they close or unexpectedly dismiss early, we will be closed).

The After-School Program typically begins on the first day of the academic school year for both Rock Hill and Fort Mill schools, and ends on the last day of school. Summer camp usually begins on the day after Memorial Day and ends the Friday prior to the beginning of the new school year.

Is there a program for the older kids?

Yes! We are proud to announce that Sullivan and Rawlinson Road Middle Schools now have their own Teen Center! Located in Rock Hill, The Club Teen Centers are targeted specifically for youth in grades 6-8. The Club speaks to teens as it provides programs for Homework assistance, Athletics, the Arts, Community Service, and Technology.  Core programs engage young people in activities that enable them to develop self-esteem and to reach their full potential. Using professionally trained staff, The Club, offers a safe, positive place for middle and high school kids to go after school. Our program is dedicated to promoting and enhancing the development of boys and girls by instilling a sense of competence, usefulness, belonging, power and influence. Boys & Girls Clubs provide diverse activities that meet the interests of all youth. CLICK HERE for more information and to register your middle schooler today! ***Minimum enrollment required***

What is a typical day like in the after-school program?

At Northside and Fort Mill Clubs - Generally, when kids arrive at the Club, they eat a light snack provided by the Club and do their homework (we call this “Power Hour”). It is required that each child completes his or her homework at the Club everyday. Once homework is complete, the kids break off into groups (by age or grade) and participate in an age appropriate lesson or activity dealing with at least one of our five core areas (Character & Leadership Development, Health & Life Skills, the Arts, Sports, Fitness, & Recreation, and Education & Career Development). The children also have access to a computer lab in the Club on a daily basis, for either homework or educational games/programs. At the end of the day, the kids clean up and get ready to return home.

The Club @ YOUR Middle School - Generally, when the teens arrive at the Club, they have a healthy snack provided by the Club. After snacks, teens go to Power Hour. Homework is completed during Power Hour and students may recieve necessary help to improve their studies. We also offer structured program sessions which cover our five core areas (Character & Leadership Development, Health & Life Skills, the Arts, Sports, Fitness, & Recreation, and Education & Career Development). Teens are also given the opportunity to interact with other Club members and enjoy various free choice activities. A computer lab is available in the Club on a daily basis.

Who can join a Boys & Girls Club?

At our Northside and Fort Mill Units, children in K-5th grades ages 5 and up may join the Club. For youth in grades 6-8, students can join their school's very own Teen Center located at Rawlinson Road and Sullivan Middle Schools.

How and when do I register my child?

A parent or guardian can either visit one of the Clubs during regular operating hours OR stop by the main office (see Locations page for a map and directions) anytime between 9 and 5 p.m. to fill out the necessary paperwork for each child. There is no deadline for after school registration – children can join at any time during the school year. You may also fill out and submit an online application for your convenience. Any additional paperwork may be delivered or faxed to the main office at (803) 324-7960. CLICK HERE to visit our Forms page to download and complete the necessary form(s) today.

When does summer camp registration begin?

Summer camp registration begins well in advance. We send out information as early as January. If you would like to be put on our mailing list for summer camp information, please call (803) 324-7920 or email at admin@bgcyc.org. For more detailed information regarding summer camp, please refer to our Summer Camp page.

How much do the After-School and Summer Camp cost?

For the After-School program at all Units, the cost per week, per child is $45 regular lunch status, $30 reduced lunch status and $15 free lunch status. For Summer Camp, the weekly fees are $100 regular lunch status, $80 reduced lunch status and $60 free lunch status. In addition to the weekly rates, new members must pay a $15 non-refundable membership fee for each child, which is drafted along with the first payment.

Will the BGCYC honor the same lunch status (Free, Reduced, Regular) that my child currently receives from either the Fort Mill or Rock Hill School Districts?

No. Due to privacy regulations, we cannot utilize the information provided by the school. Because we receive federal and state grants, we MUST verify the financial documentation of everyone to ensure he/she is being charged the correct amount of fees. We ask everyone requesting “free” or “reduced” fees to show proof of income by providing the most recent two pay stubs and a copy of your most recent Tax Return. Each year a new application must be completed. This will ensure that we have updated information to include proof of income to assist those in need.

Why are program fees so low?

It is part of our mission to provide quality youth development services at an affordable price for all children and their families. This aspect of our organization is something that we feel sets us apart from other after-school programs. It is only due to a very committed board and staff, the financial support received from numerous grants, the United Way, special event fundraisers, businesses, and individuals that we are able to offer quality programming at an affordable price. In no way does the low cost reflect the caliber of programming and mentoring that we provide to kids!

Do you offer discounts for multiple children?

No. The reason we do not offer any discounts is because (1) we feel that our prices are already offered to you at a very low and affordable rate, especially compared to other area programs, and (2) expenses for qualified staff, snacks, educational supplies and programs are based on each child, and therefore, so are the fees.

Do you provide any financial assistance or scholarships?

No. We believe that our prices are quite low and reasonable for most families. However, for those that are in need of further help, financial assistance may be obtained through the DSS Child Care ABC Voucher Program. As of November 2006, the BGCYC has achieved ABC Enhancement Status through the Department of Social Services, which means that we accept ABC Vouchers from parents who qualify. In order to apply for this program, you can stop by any of the Clubs, the administrative office, or the York or Rock Hill DSS office to obtain the application packet. Completed paperwork must be turned into one of the DSS offices, after which an interview will be scheduled. ABV vouchers are only available for youth in grades Kindergarten through fifth attending our Northside and Banks Street locations.

Do the schools provide transportation to the Club?

Some schools do bus children to the Clubs. The Boys & Girls Clubs of York County does not possess control over or responsibility for your child’s transportation to the Clubs. A parent or guardian is responsible for picking their child up from the Club each afternoon. Please refer to the After-School Program page for more information. Transportation is not necessary for Clubs located in Rock Hill Middle Schools; students report to the Club at their middle school at the end of the school day.

Is my child allowed to leave the Club on his or her own?

No. All children must be released from the Club by a parent, guardian, or designated adult who physically comes into the Club to sign their child out. Walking home from the Club is not permitted.

What happens if I am late picking my child up from the Club?

Each parent is given a five-minute grace period. For example at our Northside Unit, if you do not arrive to pick up your child by 6:35 p.m. (6:05 p.m. at the Fort Mill Club and 7:35 p.m. at the middle schools), you will be charged $1.00 per minute per child for every minute you are late after this. You have a period of 7 days in which to pay the late fee. If the late fee is not paid after 7 days, then your child may not return until the fee is paid in full. After the third late pick-up, the situation will be evaluated and membership may be terminated.

Can my child’s medication be administered by the staff at the Club?

Yes, but you must first complete the Medication Consent Form. This form is available at the Clubs, OR, you may download it here. Staff members are not allowed to dispense any over-the-counter medications. Only medication prescribed by a doctor, in its original container, and labeled with the Club member’s name will be administered.
